The Tri-County Regional Planning Commission (Tri-County), in partnership with local communities, is working to close gaps between key regional trails, including the Lansing River Trail, Paul-Henry Thornapple Trail, Fred Meijer Clinton-Ionia-Shiawassee Rail Trail, and Mike Levine Lakelands Trail State Park. This effort aims to create safe, accessible routes for walking, running, cycling, and enjoying the outdoors.
Â
In late 2023, Tri-County initiated a $2.5 million pilot project to begin implementing the Regional Trails Feasibility Plan by further analyzing and conducting Early Preliminary Engineering (EPE) to refine identified routes.Â
Â
Ultimately, the project aims to generate MDOT Transportation Alternative Program (TAP) funding to connect three state-wide multi-use trails. This project will focus on filling these crucial corridor gaps and creating connections through the tri-county region to the rest of the state.
Â
To assist this effort, the community is invited to learn about the plan, which will include conducting various public engagement opportunities. At this time, Tri-County has launched an interactive webpage, a survey, and six open houses that will allow residents to help shape the future of trail connections across the region and share feedback on the proposed trail routes.
