ArtStorm 2025 has been completed across the region, enhancing awareness of stormwater pollution

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

October 22, 2025

LANSING, Mich. — The Tri-County Regional Planning Commission (Tri-County) and the Greater Lansing Regional Committee for Stormwater Management (GLRC) completed a 17-mural placemaking project aimed at encouraging residents across the region to help prevent stormwater pollution. The project, called “ArtStorm 2025,” features murals around storm drain infrastructure and is supported by a grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s Michigan Arts and Culture Council (MACC).

Tri-County and the GLRC secured an Experience Support Grant from MACC to develop murals that connect with Mid-Michigan residents through art and educate them on protecting lakes, rivers, and streams. Managed by Tri-County, the GLRC executed the project throughout the Greater Lansing area in collaboration with the Arts Council of Greater Lansing.

"As a champion for the protection and sustainable future of our local waterways, Tri-County was thrilled to lead this educational placemaking project," said Jim Snell, executive director of the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission. "ArtStorm 2025 is an excellent reminder that a project need not be large to have a lasting impact on the community."

“The GLRC is always searching for new ways in which to encourage residents to take steps to prevent stormwater pollution,” said Paul C. Pratt, deputy drain commissioner for Ingham County and GLRC chair. “By placing ArtStorm murals in all GLRC communities, we hope to inspire thoughts on the potential impact of pollution down storm drains that lead to new behaviors to protect our water resources.”

GLRC member communities regularly work together on projects to reduce stormwater pollution and improve watershed health. The Clinton, Eaton, and Ingham County Drain Commissioners, along with the Clinton County Road Commission, have installed murals in their respective counties and in the Lansing School District, Waverly Community Schools, and Michigan State University. Murals have also been placed in the cities of DeWitt, East Lansing, Grand Ledge, Lansing, and Mason, as well as in the townships of Delhi, Delta, DeWitt, Lansing, and Meridian. The project has gained widespread approval from communities and residents alike.

“We were delighted to support the growth of local artists Victoria Taava Ericks and Maricela Tapia through the ArtStorm Project,” said Arts Council executive director, Meghan Martin. “We are proud to have partnered with GLRC and Tri-County to meet our mission of creating vibrant communities through the arts and are gratified to help expand placemaking in so many communities.”

GLRC and Tri-County plan to boost engagement with the ArtStorm murals through the five geocaching Adventure Labs they have developed. These treasure hunts will lead participants on a journey through the murals, encouraging them to find clues within the educational messages that direct them to a cache. The cache contains a logbook and small trinkets or treasures. To join, individuals need to download the Adventure Lab app and find the bit.ly/StormwaterArtStorm adventure.
